| Next-Gen.biz, an video game industry website, has posted brief descriptions and brief retail performance verdicts recently. Things to note - Ridge Racer seems to have the dimmest prospects of all launch titles. Project Gotham Racing 3 however, will be a sure hit if this report is to be believed. As we all knew, many of the sports games are no-brainers - everyone knows their position on them. PDZ and Kameo also have bright futures, but other titles are lacking in potential sales. King Kong gets slated for it's graphics on the current gen - something I agree with after seeing it's recent TV commercials. To be honest, current generation does look kind of "icky" now that 360 is powering it's way into our lounges. ACTION ADVENTURE GAMES Perfect Dark Zero Microsoft Game Studios The 360’s biggest launch shooter and biggest game. First party developer Rare has clearly spent a lot of time tweaking those visuals, and it shows. While the typical FPS gameplay isn’t going to set the genre on fire, PDZ does serve as a lesson in how an Xbox 360 should look to other developers. Retail rating: Flier. Call of Duty 2 Activision The WWII first-person shooter will prove a popular choice among those early Xbox 360 adopters not taken by PDZ. The gameplay offers little that's novel, but the experience feel great. If you’ve got the means to play in surround sound, do so. It's stunning. Retail rating: Pitch it to front-room show-offs. Kameo: Elements of Power Microsoft Game Studios Rare’s colorful action-adventure romp is brimming with trademark charm and playability. Thanks to the extra horsepower of 360, Rare’s second launch title is again a lesson to others in terms of next-gen looks. It should keep both the young and young at heart occupied for a very long time though may not fly off the shelves at first. Retail rating: One for the long haul. Quake 4 Activision Solid, if slightly underwhelming Xbox 360 port of the recently released PC Strogg-shooter. The inclusion of Quake II and some exquisitely tuned multiplayer options are bound to grab the frenzied interest of id’s faithful fraggers though this feels like a filler. Retail rating: So-so performer. Condemned: Criminal Origins Sega While the world waits for Resident Evil 5, scare tactics have been left to Sega as it attempts to stamp its authority on the horror genre with this dark and deeply disturbing action shooter. Retail rating: Won't be on many people's launch line-up. Peter Jackson’s King Kong Ubisoft Ubisoft’s sole launch title is a critically acclaimed movie-tie in that should turn a few heads even if, under all that polish and shine, it’s a short-lived step-by-step walkthrough of Peter Jackson’s monster hit. Retail rating: Looks great on Xbox 360, but won't top the platform's chart. GUN Activision Tony Hawk developer Treyarch tackles life in the Wild West with this violent third person adventure-based shooter. Trouble is, this looks more like it’s running on a PC rather than a next generation console. Treyarch should have spoken to Rare to get a little help in the graphics department. Retail rating: Well informed buyers won't be easily convinced. RACING GAMES Need for Speed: Most Wanted Electronic Arts After being touted as one of the games that’ll blow the competition away visually, the latest in EA’s long running racing franchise is somewhat of a letdown. It’s more of a shiny port of the current generation game, which is also due to be released towards the end of this month. Retail rating: Will perform better on current generation. Project Gotham Racing 3 Microsoft Game Studios As Xbox became known as the exclusive home for fans of FPS and racers, the tradition looks set to continue on 360. Expect this one to wow the crowds with its frightening sense of speed and terrific visuals. Bet on PGR3 shifting some serious units through the launch period and beyond. This is going to take over Xbox Live, especially with the option to watch the best players in the world via Gotham TV. Retail rating: A must purchase. Ridge Racer 6 Namco As another console emerges so does another racing-by-numbers Ridge Racer game. A typical mix of next-gen visuals with current gen gameplay. Anyone who picks this up over PGR3 needs their head testing. Retail rating: Could be one of the launch line-up's slowest movers. SPORTS GAMES Madden NFL 06 EA Bound to be on every sports fans’ shopping list. Who’s going to be able to resist the first next-gen Madden experience? It looks so good that Microsoft has even announced it as a European launch title too. Retail rating: Probably already sold to those likely to buy. Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 EA It's a good looking golf game, featuring the best grass in a videogame ever. This may not be a priority for many early adopters. Retail rating: Solid performer over the next 12 months. Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland Activision Another shiny port of a game recently released on Xbox and PS2. Does nothing to show off the power of 360 and comes across as a straight port. Retail rating: So-so. Amped 3 2K Sports The former first party franchise from Microsoft now resides under the 2K umbrella. It's clearly the best looking game of its genre but there’s also a brand new physics system in place. Retail rating: May be on a few people's 'third purchase' list. NBA Live 06 Electronic Arts Like many of the sports games here, the pitch is in the looks. This is the best looking basketball game we've ever seen. Retail rating: See Madden FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup Electronic Arts Second time around Microsoft makes sure there’s an online-enabled global soccer title for the masses ready at launch. EA’s latest offering is based on the official license to next year’s World Cup tournament. Both EA and FIFA have again teamed up to host the FIFA Interactive World Cup, which should provide enough of an incentive to keep those Live servers pretty warm for the first few months of Live. Retail Rating: More for the European launch. | |||
