| "The Darkness," a popular comic book that has generated more than $25 million in print sales, is the latest print property to go the multimedia route, with plans for a feature film and video game adaption. Hong Kong-born directors Danny and Oxide Pang ("The Messengers") have signed a deal to make a big-screen adaptation of the Top Cow Prods. project, which revolves around a Mafia hitman who discovers that he is the heir to a formidable mystical force called the Darkness. The movie will be released in 2007, concurrent with the "Darkness" video game, which will be available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. Scott Rosenberg, who is producing the movie via his Platinum Studios banner, said the game and film will have different story lines. The game will focus more on action and fighting, while the film will serve as an origin story for the central character, Jackie Estacado. With casting not yet underway, it's too early to know if the game will include actors' likenesses and voice work from the film. Rosenberg said the Pang brothers will talk to game developers about the film vision. "When we talk about the movie, we'll also talk about the game," said Rosenberg, who added that while video game and comic book fans overlap, casual gamers can learn about the film through game press. He said that the perfect release plan would be for the game to hit shelves two to four weeks before the film opens, which would allow the game to ride the marketing of the film. Platinum Studios will finance half the film production, which is set up at Miramax. Top Cow founder and "Darkness" co-creator Marc Silvestri will serve as an executive producer.
